Which Roads Require a Vignette in Hungary?
Hungary’s e-vignette network includes the M0 and motorways M1–M9, M15, M19, M30, M31, M35, M43, M44, M49, M60, M70, M85 and M86, including the M6 section to the Ivándárda border. County vignettes cover toll roads in one county.
Vehicles: D1 covers passenger cars up to 3,500 kg with no more than 7 seats; D1M is for motorcycles. D2 covers vehicles that do not meet D1 rules, including motorhomes with more than 7 seats. From 2026, motorhomes over 3,500 kg also need an e-vignette (usually D2, based on registration documents). Goods vehicles over 3,500 kg use HU-GO. Electric vehicles are not automatically exempt.
How to Buy the Hungary Vignette
The easiest way is to buy online before you travel. You can also purchase at petrol stations near the border.
Visit ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu or motorway.hu (both available in English, German, Hungarian, and other languages).
Enter your licence plate and country of registration.
Choose a national, county, M1 regional or discounted Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén product according to your route. The national D1 vignette covers all toll roads.
Pay online by card; the official e-vignette rates include VAT.
The e-matrica is registered immediately in the NÚSZ database. You will receive a confirmation email. No physical display is required.
Where to Buy in Person
- Petrol stations along Hungarian motorways and near border crossings (~5,000 locations: MOL, Shell, OMV, BP, Lukoil)
- Post offices (Magyar Posta)
- Supermarkets and shopping centres (selected locations)
- NÚSZ customer service kiosks at border crossings
Fines for Driving Without a Vignette in Hungary
Fine amount
For unauthorized road use in 2026, the base surcharge is HUF 27,790 if paid within 60 days, and HUF 95,730 after 60 days. A lower-category vignette can incur a separate differential surcharge.
How enforcement works
NÚSZ (National Toll Payment Services) operates a full ANPR camera network on motorway entry/exit gantries and overhead gantries nationwide. All violations are recorded automatically and fines posted to the registered owner's address, including foreign addresses. No human check is required.
Important Tips & Notes
Always choose the national vignette if you are driving across multiple counties — the county vignette covers only one county and is only useful for local commuters.
The M0 ring road around Budapest is covered by the national e-matrica.
Electric vehicles are NOT automatically exempt in Hungary — they still need a valid e-matrica.
The 2026 products include national, county, M1 regional and discounted Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén options; compare coverage before purchase.
Prices are charged in HUF. Confirm the product, vehicle category and validity period before payment.
