About Trip Cost Calculator

Independently built. Privacy-first. Free to use.

Trip Cost Calculator is a free, independent tool that estimates the real cost of a road trip — fuel, tolls, vignettes — across 30+ European countries and beyond. No account, no email, no app to install. Type two cities, get a transparent breakdown of what the drive will actually cost.

The problem we set out to solve

Every existing route planner we tried fell short in the same way. Google Maps shows you the distance and the time, but not the cost. Most "fuel calculator" sites assume one country, one currency, and a single average price. Toll information is scattered across a dozen national operator websites. Vignette prices change with every season. Planning a Bucharest → Berlin trip meant opening eight browser tabs and doing the math on paper.

We wanted one screen that answers the actual question — how much will this trip cost me, end-to-end, in the currency I think in? — and that works for both petrol/diesel and electric vehicles, in metric or imperial, in any of 30+ languages.

What the calculator does

  • Two route variants side-by-side — the fastest route and the cheapest (toll-free) alternative, so you can see the trade-off explicitly.
  • Real per-country toll and vignette data, proportional to the kilometres you actually drive in each country.
  • Fuel volume as well as cost — see exactly how many litres, gallons, or kilowatt-hours the trip will consume.
  • Currency-aware — pick any of 30+ currencies; all costs are converted at consistent reference rates.
  • EV-aware — switch to electric and the consumption units, charging stations, and per-kWh price all adapt.
  • Works offline as a PWA — install it from your browser and the next calculation works even without signal.

How we keep the data accurate

Cost estimates are only useful if the underlying numbers are right. Our editorial standards:

  • Toll rates are sourced from the official operator websites of each country (e.g. ASFA in France, AISCAT in Italy, ANAS, ASFINAG, NDW) and reviewed periodically. Where rates are published in a foreign currency, we convert at the rate displayed at calculation time.
  • Vignette prices are taken from each country's official issuer (e.g. ASFINAG for Austria, DARS for Slovenia, NM for Switzerland) and refreshed at the start of each annual pricing cycle.
  • Fuel and EV charging prices default to reasonable per-country averages, but every user can override them in two clicks — your own price always wins.
  • Distance and routing come from Google Maps Directions, which is the same data source the consumer Google Maps app uses for live traffic and routing.
  • Currency conversion uses reference rates that we audit periodically; for high-stakes trips, always cross-check at the pump or the till.

We treat the calculator's output as an estimate, not a quote. Real-world fuel prices vary day-to-day, toll operators sometimes update mid-year, and route conditions change. If you spot a mistake, please tell us — corrections usually ship the same week.

What we deliberately don't do

  • No accounts. No sign-up, no password, no "verify your email". The calculator works the moment the page loads.
  • No server-side route storage. Your trips, settings, and history live in your browser (localStorage). We have no database of who-drove-where.
  • No selling of data. We don't collect personal data, so there is nothing to sell. The only third parties we share anonymised traffic data with are Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity (and only after you accept the analytics cookie category).
  • No dark patterns. The cookie banner has a one-click "Reject all". No upsells, no countdown timers, no fake scarcity.

How we keep it free

The site is funded entirely by non-personalised display ads (Google AdSense, when enabled) — only loaded after you accept the advertising category in the cookie banner. No affiliate links, no referrals, no kickbacks: what you see is what you get.

We will never put the core calculator behind a paywall. If the day ever comes that we need a "Pro" tier, it will be for advanced features (CSV export, fleet planning) on top of the free baseline.

Who's behind it

Trip Cost Calculator is built and maintained by a small, independent team of European drivers, software engineers, and frequent road-trippers. We've crossed enough borders to be tired of guessing what the trip will cost — so we built the tool we wished existed.

The site is not affiliated with any car manufacturer, fuel retailer, mapping provider, or toll operator. Editorial choices (which countries we cover, which prices we surface, how the routes are compared) are made entirely by us, with input from user emails.
