About the UK journey cost calculator
Built the way British drivers think about running a car: miles on the road signs, mpg for the car, and pence per litre on the forecourt. Enter any two UK postcodes or place names and you get fuel cost, mileage and total spend in pounds, whether you are costing a commute, a trip to see family or a business mileage claim.
Miles, mpg and pence per litre
The mixed units Britain actually uses. Your mpg is in imperial gallons, not the smaller US gallon, so a 50 mpg car is treated as 50 mpg and not 41.6.
Petrol and diesel priced properly
Set the pump price in pence per litre exactly as you see it on the forecourt sign, and the calculator converts to your mpg internally.
UK tolls and crossings
Most British motorways are free, so the total reflects that. Where a route uses a paid crossing the cost is estimated rather than assumed away.

UK journey cost questions
Divide the miles by your mpg to get gallons, multiply by 4.546 to get litres, then multiply by the price per litre. A 200-mile trip at 45 mpg with fuel at £1.58 works out at about £31.90. The calculator does all of that from your postcodes.
Because that is how Britain works. Road signs and odometers are in miles, cars are described in miles per gallon, but fuel is sold by the litre. Mixing the two is correct here, not a mistake — we convert between them for you.
No, and the difference is large. An imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, a US gallon is 3.785. The same car rated at 50 mpg in Britain would be quoted as 41.6 mpg in America, so UK and US mpg figures are not interchangeable.
Almost none. Unlike France or Italy, the UK motorway network is free to use. The exceptions are the M6 Toll north of Birmingham and a handful of estuary crossings such as the Dartford Crossing, the Mersey Gateway and the Tyne Tunnel.
No. Those are daily zone charges rather than road tolls, and they depend on your vehicle's emissions and the day you travel, so they are not in the total. As a guide, the Congestion Charge is £15 a day and ULEZ is £12.50 a day for non-compliant vehicles. Check the Transport for London site for your registration before you drive in.
Use your own trip computer figure if you have it, because real-world economy is typically 10-20% worse than the official number. If you are guessing, around 45 mpg is reasonable for a modern petrol car, 55 for a diesel, and 35 for a petrol SUV.
It is useful for checking actual fuel spend, but HMRC mileage allowance works differently — it pays a flat rate per mile (45p for the first 10,000 miles in a car) regardless of what fuel cost you. Use the mileage figure here and apply the HMRC rate to that.
