What you can find
From a rapid top-up on the motorway to somewhere to plug in overnight.
50 kW rapids and 150-350 kW ultra-rapids at motorway services and retail parks, for adding real range in 20-40 minutes rather than overnight.
Slower 7-22 kW posts at hotels, car parks, supermarkets and attractions, where you charge while doing something else.
Results come from live Google Places data with ratings and directions, so you can avoid the sites other drivers report as broken or blocked.
How to plan UK charging
The UK network is dense but unevenly reliable, so a little planning still pays.
Enter a postcode, town or the name of a motorway services to see charging nearby.
Ultra-rapid for a motorway stop, 7-22 kW if you are parking for a few hours anyway. Paying rapid rates for an all-day stay is money wasted.
Pick a second site a few miles further on. Single-charger locations do fail, and a queue at a busy services can cost you more time than the detour.

Main UK charging networks
Most now take contactless, so you no longer need an app for every network — though app or subscription pricing is often cheaper.
BP Pulse
One of the largest UK networks, with rapids and ultra-rapids at forecourts and retail sites. Subscription pricing undercuts the pay-as-you-go rate.
Instavolt
Contactless-only rapids and ultra-rapids with a strong reliability record and simple flat pricing. No app or membership needed.
Gridserve Electric Highway
Motorway services coverage plus the Electric Forecourt sites, with high-power charging aimed squarely at long-distance journeys.
Ionity and Shell Recharge
High-power charging on major corridors, priced at the premium end unless you have a manufacturer tariff or subscription.
Tesla Supercharger
Extensive and reliable, and most UK sites are now open to non-Tesla cars through the Tesla app, usually at a lower rate for members.
Charger types and connectors
Nearly every modern UK electric car uses CCS for rapid charging and Type 2 for slower AC.
Ultra-rapid, 150-350 kW
CCS only. Adds around 100 miles in 15-20 minutes on a car that can take the full rate, which is what makes long UK journeys practical.
Best for: motorway stops on long trips
Rapid, 50 kW
Usually CCS, sometimes with a legacy CHAdeMO lead. The old backbone of the network, still common and fine for a 30-40 minute stop.
Best for: topping up mid-journey
Fast AC, 7-22 kW
Type 2 socket, typically needing your own cable. Adds roughly 25-30 miles an hour of charge, so it suits a long stay.
Best for: car parks, hotels, shopping
Home and workplace charging
A 7 kW home wallbox on an EV tariff is by far the cheapest way to charge, often under 10p per kWh overnight against 70-85p at a public rapid.
Best for: everyday charging if you have off-street parking
What UK charging costs
The gap between home and public charging is wider in the UK than almost anywhere, which is what makes a driveway so valuable.
Roughly 7-10p per kWh overnight. At 3.5 miles per kWh that is about 2-3p a mile, several times cheaper than petrol.
Typically 70-85p per kWh, which works out around 20-24p a mile — comparable to, and sometimes worse than, an efficient diesel.
Around 40-55p per kWh, and some supermarket and council posts are still free or heavily subsidised for the first few hours.
UK EV charging questions

About 7-10p per kWh at home on an overnight EV tariff, roughly 40-55p on slower public AC, and 70-85p at a public rapid. A 60 kWh battery therefore costs around £5 to fill at home and £45 or more on a rapid.
Essentially every electric car sold in the UK now uses CCS for rapid DC charging and Type 2 for AC. Only older Nissan Leaf and a few Japanese models use CHAdeMO, and support for it is gradually being withdrawn.
Not any more. Regulations require new rapid chargers to take contactless payment, and Instavolt has always been contactless-only. Apps and subscriptions still tend to be cheaper, so they are worth having for networks you use often.
At home, dramatically — around 2-3p a mile against 13-16p for a 45 mpg petrol car. On public rapids at 70-85p per kWh the advantage largely disappears, at roughly 20-24p a mile. Where you charge matters more than what you drive.
On a 150 kW ultra-rapid, about 20 minutes for 10-80% on a car that can accept the full rate. On a 50 kW rapid, closer to 45 minutes. On a 7 kW home wallbox, overnight.
Yes, at most UK sites now. You use the Tesla app to start the session, and a monthly membership brings the per-kWh rate down to something close to Tesla owners pay.
Electric cars meet ULEZ standards so pay nothing there. The London Congestion Charge cleaner vehicle discount ended in December 2025, so EVs now pay the £15 daily charge like everyone else — check the current position with Transport for London before you drive in.
