Major US charging networks
Coverage, pricing and plug type vary by network. These are the ones you will actually encounter on a US road trip.
Tesla Supercharger
The largest and most reliable DC fast network in the US, using the NACS connector. Now open to many Ford, GM, Rivian and other EVs, either natively or with a NACS adapter.
Electrify America
CCS1-focused DC fast network concentrated along interstate corridors and at Walmart and Target sites, with 150 kW and 350 kW cabinets.
EVgo
Urban-heavy DC fast network, frequently in grocery and retail lots, offering both CCS1 and CHAdeMO with subscription pricing that lowers the per-kWh rate.
ChargePoint
The largest Level 2 footprint in the country — workplaces, garages, hotels and municipal lots. Many ChargePoint J1772 stations are free or validated by the host.
Blink, Rivian and others
Blink, Rivian Adventure Network, Francis Energy and newer joint ventures fill in regional gaps, particularly in the South and rural corridors funded by the federal NEVI program.
US charging levels and connectors
What each plug does, and which one your car takes.
Level 1 (120V)
A standard household outlet, adding roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour. Fine as an overnight trickle for a plug-in hybrid, impractical for anything else.
Best for: PHEVs and emergency top-ups
Level 2 (240V, J1772)
The US AC standard at 7–19 kW, adding about 25–40 miles of range per hour. This is what you find at workplaces, hotels, garages and most home installs.
Best for: overnight, workday and destination charging
DC fast charging (CCS1)
50–350 kW direct current, taking most EVs from 10% to 80% in 20–40 minutes. CCS1 is the non-Tesla US standard, with CHAdeMO surviving mainly on older Nissan Leafs.
Best for: interstate road trips and quick highway stops
NACS (Tesla, J3400)
Tesla's connector, now an SAE standard and being adopted across the industry. Tesla vehicles use it natively; many other EVs can access Superchargers with a NACS adapter.
Best for: Tesla drivers and adapter-equipped EVs
What it costs to charge an EV in the US
Public charging is priced per kWh in most states, and per minute in a few where per-kWh billing is restricted.
Typically $0.35–0.60 per kWh. Filling a 60 kWh battery from near-empty runs about $25–35, or roughly 10–14 cents per mile — close to, and sometimes above, the cost of gas.
Often $0.20–0.35 per kWh, and free at plenty of hotels, workplaces and retail sites where the host covers it as an amenity.
At the US average of about 16 cents per kWh, a full 60 kWh charge costs near $10 — roughly 4 cents per mile, and the reason most EV owners charge at home overnight.

At a DC fast charger, expect $0.35–0.60 per kWh, so roughly $25–35 to refill a 60 kWh battery. At home at the US average of about 16 cents per kWh, the same charge costs near $10. Home charging is about a quarter the price of fast charging, which is why most owners do it overnight.
Increasingly, yes. Tesla has opened much of its US Supercharger network to other brands. Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo and others have access, either with a NACS adapter on a CCS1 car or through a native NACS port on newer models. Check your automaker's app for which sites are enabled.
J1772 is the US Level 2 AC plug on nearly every non-Tesla EV. CCS1 adds two DC pins below a J1772 head for fast charging. NACS is Tesla's smaller connector, now an SAE standard, which handles both AC and DC through one plug. CHAdeMO is legacy and mostly limited to older Nissan Leafs.
A 150 kW charger typically takes an EV from 10% to 80% in 20–35 minutes; a 350 kW cabinet can do it in under 20 minutes if the car accepts that rate. Charging deliberately slows above 80% to protect the battery, so on a road trip it is faster to stop twice to 80% than once to 100%.
Yes, mostly Level 2. Hotels, workplaces, municipal garages, some grocery chains and many ChargePoint host sites offer free charging as an amenity. Free DC fast charging is rare outside promotional deals bundled with a new EV purchase.
Space DC fast stops about 150–200 miles apart, which keeps you in the fast part of the charging curve and leaves margin for a station being busy or down. Use this map to find chargers near your interstate exits, and always identify a backup station within range of the first.
Most DC fast networks charge a per-minute idle fee once your car is done charging and you have not moved it. It exists to keep stalls turning over at busy sites. Move the car promptly, or watch for the notification in your network's app.
